Professor Martin Salisbury is a renowned academic and practitioner in children’s book illustration, affiliated with Anglia Ruskin University’s Cambridge School of Art, part of the Faculty of Arts, Humanities, Education and Social Sciences. He directs the Children’s Centre for Book Studies and leads the BA (Hons) Illustration programme. Previously, he worked as a freelance illustrator and taught part-time before accepting a permanent fractional academic role.
He holds a BA (Hons) Illustration and focuses on research areas including children’s picturebook history, British Neo-Romantic art (1940s–50s), visual narrative structures, and drawing techniques. His global influence is evident through his editorial roles, jury memberships (e.g., Bologna Ragazzi Awards), and keynotes at institutions like Tsinghua University and the Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris.
Notable publications include Illustrator's Sketchbooks (2023) and Children's Picturebooks: The Art of Visual Storytelling (2012). His work explores cross-genre narratives, postmodern picturebooks, and the role of ‘place’ in illustration, blending practice-based research with critical analysis.
Awarded roles include International Jury member for the CJ Picturebook Festival in Seoul and advisor to the Salon du Livre Illustration Competition. His contributions shape both academic curricula (e.g., the MA Children’s Book Illustration course) and global publishing discourse.
