Martin Remmele

Martin Remmele is a Professor of Biology and Science Education at the University of Trier since April 2024. Previously, he held roles as Academic Oberat (2023), Academic Rat (2018), and Realschullehrer (2006–2016) at Karlsruhe University of Education (PH Karlsruhe) and administrative duties at TU Braunschweig (2022).

His research focuses on two primary areas: (1) the impact of digital stereoscopic visualizations on science teaching and learning, particularly in anatomy education, and (2) Species Literacy—familiarity with species and strategies to enhance identification skills in educational contexts. He has published extensively on these topics, including studies on virtual reality, game-based learning, and environmental education.

Recent publications (2024–2025) highlight his work in citizen science projects (hazel dormouse tracking), plant biodiversity (schoolyard ecology), and educational technology (BirdNET audio recognition). His 2023–2021 studies explore invasive species perception, wildlife value orientations, and the role of visual realism in learning.

Remmele serves as co-editor of Unterricht Biologie (since 2023) and has contributed to advisory boards for the Black Forest National Park (2018–2020) and Karlsruhe Wildlife Rescue Center (2018–2022). He is a member of the German Society for Biology Didactics (since 2014) and the German University Association (since 2024).

His educational background includes a Dr. phil. summa cum laude (2016) from PH Karlsruhe on stereoscopic human anatomy education, a First State Examination (2004) from PH Heidelberg, and a Second State Examination (2006) in Karlsruhe. His teaching emphasizes pedagogical innovation, with a focus on digital tools, species identification games, and climate change curriculum integration.
