Martin R. Pettet is a Professor in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Toledo, affiliated with the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics. He holds a Ph.D. in Mathematics from Yale University (1974), under the supervision of Walter Feit. His professional experience includes roles at Yale University, University of Wisconsin-Madison, and Texas A&M University before joining the University of Toledo in 1981.
Pettet's research focuses on group theory, automorphism groups, and related algebraic structures. He has advised at least one Ph.D. student, Vijay Vadakkekurputh (1997). His Erdős number is 3, achieved through collaborative chains involving number theory and combinatorics.
Notable contributions include studies on automorphism groups of finite and infinite groups, fixed-point-free automorphisms, and applications in algebraic structures like near-rings. He served as Director of Graduate Programs (1999-2004) and Acting Associate Chair (2007-2008). His publications span journals such as Proceedings of the American Mathematical Society, Journal of Algebra, and Transactions of the American Mathematical Society.
Key topics in his work include group automorphisms, subgroup structures, and combinatorial group theory. His research bridges abstract algebra with applications in topology and number theory.
