Martin L. Demaine is a Lecturer at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), affiliated with the School of Engineering through the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science and the Department of Materials Science and Engineering. He serves as the Angelika and Barton Weller Artist-in-Residence and a Technical Instructor in the MIT Glass Lab, with additional roles in the Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL) and the Theory of Computation group.
His work integrates mathematics and art, exemplified by collaborations with his son, Erik Demaine, on projects like computational origami, curved-crease sculptures (held in the Museum of Modern Art and Renwick Gallery), and mathematical fonts. He co-authored the Linkage Puzzle Font paper (2014), which explores fixed-angle linkages as models for protein folding, and co-directed the award-winning film Lino Tagliapietra: Glass Magician (2011).
