Martin Koltzenburg is a Clinical Professor and Chair of the Division of Neurophysiology at UCL Queen Square Institute of Neurology, UK, and Head of the Department of Clinical Neurophysiology at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, UCLH. He has held these roles since 2007 and was previously a Professor of Pain Research at UCL (2001–2007) and Neuroscience Theme Leader (2003–2007).
- Education: Dr. med. and Ärztliche Prüfung (MD) from Christian-Albrechts University of Kiel (1989), intercalated BSc at UCL (1983–1984), postdoctoral work at Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg and Uppsala University.
His research spans experimental medicine, clinical neurophysiology, pain and nociception, with a focus on translational biomarkers and sensorimotor control. Key publications address neurodegenerative disorders (e.g., ALS, prion disease), nociceptor function, nerve excitability, and molecular pain mechanisms (e.g., TRP channels, NGF signaling).
Selected scientific awards include the Patrick Wall Lecture and Medal (2013, 2010), Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians (2004), and the Ronald Dubner Research Prize (1993).
He leads the Division of Neurophysiology at UCL and the Clinical Neurophysiology Department at UCLH, with prior academic roles at University of Würzburg, Uppsala, and Erlangen-Nürnberg.
