Martin Kehl is Professor of Physical Geography – Anthropogenic Landscape Changes at the University of Koblenz, where he serves as Managing Director of the Geography Department and Head of the Physical Geography Group. His career spans multiple German institutions including the University of Cologne (2017-2023) and University of Koblenz-Landau (2019-2020), with significant involvement in the Collaborative Research Center 806 'Our way to Europe'.
His academic qualifications:
- Habilitation: University of Bonn (2007)
- Re-habilitation: University of Cologne (2014)
- Doctorate: University of Bonn (1997)
- Applied Physical Geography Studies: University of Trier (1986-1993)
Kehl's research centers on human-induced landscape transformations through geomorphological and Quaternary lenses. He investigates soil-landscape evolution under anthropogenic pressures, specializing in Holocene environmental changes and early human migration patterns across Europe. His methodology integrates field geomorphology with soil science to reconstruct anthropogenic impacts on river systems and agricultural landscapes.
Leading the Physical Geography Group, he directs research on landscape dynamics using sedimentological analysis and geochronological techniques. Current projects focus on quantifying human alterations to fluvial systems and developing models for sustainable landscape management in Central Europe.
