Martin J. Lercher

Professor Martin J. Lercher is a Professor of Computational Cell Biology at Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf. He has been affiliated with the Collaborative Research Centre on Plant Sciences (CEPLAS) since 2012, where he leads theoretical modeling efforts in Research Area 4: "Theoretical Plant Biology and Data Science." His work bridges physics, biology, and computational approaches to understand fundamental principles of cellular organization.

Dr. Lercher's research focuses on the molecular organization and evolution of cellular systems, particularly metabolism. He develops multi-scale models that combine coarse-grained anatomical descriptions with detailed molecular models of photosynthesis, describing the flow of mass and energy through plants based exclusively on physical and chemical laws. His primary interest lies in understanding the theoretically optimal distribution of cellular resources from the perspective of natural selection, and how this compares with observed biological systems.

His recent publications demonstrate a strong trend toward applying machine learning and deep learning techniques to problems in enzymology and metabolic modeling. The articles reveal an increasing focus on quantitative approaches to predict enzyme kinetics, substrate specificity, and resource allocation in cellular systems.
