Martin Hose

Professor Martin Hose is a distinguished scholar of Greek Philology at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (LMU), where he has held a professorship since 1997. He previously taught at University College London, the Universities of Konstanz, Heidelberg, and Greifswald. His administrative roles include serving as Dean of the Faculty of Languages and Literature (1999-2001), Chairman of the Senate of LMU (2007-2015), and Deputy Chairman of the University Council.

Professor Hose's research focuses on Greek drama, historiography, Hellenistic poetry, and Greek literature of the imperial period. His scholarly approach combines close textual analysis with broader cultural and historical perspectives, examining how literary forms evolved across different periods of antiquity. He has made significant contributions to understanding Euripides, ancient historiography, and the interplay between Greek and Roman literary traditions.

His extensive publication record spans over three decades, with recent works demonstrating continued scholarly productivity. His research demonstrates particular interest in literary history, textual reception, and the theoretical frameworks that shape our understanding of ancient literature. Professor Hose has edited numerous scholarly volumes and serves on the editorial boards of major classical journals including Gnomon and Hermes.

Among his notable honors, Professor Hose has been a Full Member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences since 2001, where he has served as Secretary of the philological-historical Class and Humanities Section, and as Vice President since 2016. He has also been involved with international scholarly organizations including the Fédération Internationale des Associations d'Études Classiques (FIEC).

Professor Hose maintains an active scholarly presence through his editorial work, including co-editing Gnomon since 2000 and serving as Editor-in-Chief. He has supervised numerous academic projects and contributed to major research initiatives, including serving as Spokesperson of the Graduate School 'Distant Worlds' from 2013-2016. His academic leadership extends to mentoring younger scholars and shaping the field through his involvement in professional organizations.
