Prof. Dr. Dr. hc Martin Heger serves as Professor of Criminal Law, Criminal Procedure Law, European Criminal Law and Modern Legal History at Humboldt University of Berlin's Faculty of Law. His chair is located at Bebelplatz 2 ("Commode") Room 134 in Berlin, with postal address at Unter den Linden 6, 10099 Berlin. He leads a substantial research team including scientific associates, research assistants, and student assistants.
Professor Heger's research spans multiple critical areas of criminal law including European Criminal Law, Criminal Procedure Law, Modern Legal History, White-collar Crime, and Asset Recovery Law. His work examines the intersection of national criminal systems with European frameworks, particularly focusing on how political contexts influence criminal proceedings. The chair actively participates in international comparative legal research and maintains strong connections with institutions across Europe.
The chair currently oversees numerous research projects, including the DFG project "Criminal proceedings as a political weapon" which examines how criminal justice systems can be manipulated for political purposes. Professor Heger's team maintains the East-West Network (NOW) which facilitates academic exchange between legal scholars from different regions.
Professor Heger supervises doctoral candidates and has mentored numerous research associates who have gone on to positions including Head of Administration of the Faculty of Law at Humboldt University. His teaching portfolio includes International Criminal Law, European Criminal Law, and Criminal Procedure Law courses at both undergraduate and graduate levels.
