Martin D. Provencher, Ph.D. is a Full Professor at the School of Psychology, Laval University in Quebec City, Canada. His office is located in Pavillon Félix-Antoine-Savard (FAS-1048) at the university campus. Dr. Provencher specializes in cognitive-behavioral therapy for mood and anxiety disorders, with particular expertise in bipolar disorder, depression, and generalized anxiety disorder.
Before his appointment as a professor, Dr. Provencher completed an internship accredited by the Canadian Psychological Association in Calgary, Alberta. He subsequently worked as a clinical psychologist at the Mood Disorders Clinic of the University Institute of Mental Health of Quebec, and as a clinician-researcher at the Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy Unit of Hôtel-Dieu de Lévis. He served as president of the Canadian Association for Cognitive and Behavioral Therapies (ACTCC-CACBT).
Dr. Provencher's research focuses on developing, applying, and evaluating evidence-based psychological approaches for treating mood and anxiety disorders in clinical settings. His recent work integrates patient self-management practices to determine characteristics of effective and supportive approaches, developing person-centered interventions. He has extensive research on transdiagnostic cognitive behavioral therapy, examining its effectiveness for anxiety disorders, depression, and bipolar disorder, with particular attention to comorbid conditions and implementation in real-world healthcare settings.
His publication record shows a strong emphasis on transdiagnostic approaches to cognitive behavioral therapy, particularly examining cost-effectiveness, implementation in primary care settings, and applications for specific populations such as postnatal women. His work frequently addresses the intersection of anxiety and mood disorders, with special attention to bipolar disorder. Much of his research takes a pragmatic approach, evaluating interventions in real-world clinical settings rather than highly controlled laboratory conditions.
Dr. Provencher has been actively involved in the implementation of evidence-based practices in Quebec's mental health system, particularly through the Programme québécois pour les troubles mentaux. His work bridges research and clinical practice, focusing on how to effectively translate evidence-based interventions into routine clinical care.
