Martin Bichler is Head of the Department of Computer Science at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) and head of the research group Decision Sciences and Systems. He is also affiliated with the TUM School of Management and a core member of the Munich Data Science Institute. He has held leadership positions including Vice Dean at the Department of Computer Science of TUM (2019-2022) and is currently on the School Council of the School of Computation, Information, and Technology.
His educational background includes a Master degree from the Technical University of Vienna, and Doctorate and Habilitation from the Vienna University of Economics and Business. He has held research positions at UC Berkeley, IBM T. J. Watson Research Center, University of Cambridge, HP Labs Palo Alto, Yale University, Stanford University, and the Simons Laufer Mathematical Sciences Institute.
Professor Bichler's research focuses on Market Design, Game Theory, Auction Theory, and Algorithmic Game Theory. His work spans theoretical foundations to practical applications in electricity markets, platform design, and algorithmic pricing. He investigates how learning algorithms affect market dynamics, equilibrium computation, and strategic behavior in complex market environments.
His most recent publications explore cutting-edge topics including game dynamics with learning agents, distributionally robust auction design, algorithmic collusion, equilibrium analysis in asymmetric markets, and electricity market design challenges. These works demonstrate his interdisciplinary approach bridging computer science, economics, and operations research to solve complex market design problems.
His notable awards include the EURO Excellence in Practice Award, INFORMS Daniel H. Wagner prize (runner-up), HP Labs eAward, IBM Faculty Award, INFORMS ISS Design Science Award (twice), Siemens SCM Olympics, a DFG Koselleck project, and an ERC Advanced Grant. He has received the TeachInf Award five times from the student union of the Department of Informatics.
Bichler has supervised numerous PhD students, with alumni including Dr. Mete Ş. Ahunbay, Dr. Eleni Batziou, Dr. Martin Bullinger, and others. He has secured significant research funding including the ERC Advanced Grant (2025-2030) and has been spokesperson for the DFG Research Training Group AdONE since 2017. His editorial roles include Department Editor for INFORMS Management Science (2023-) and Senior Editor for INFORMS Information Systems Research (2023-).
His research group Decision Sciences and Systems is actively engaged in projects related to equilibrium learning, uncertainty, and dynamics in markets. The group collaborates with institutions worldwide and contributes to major market design initiatives, including electricity market reforms and auction design for complex resource allocation problems.
