Martin Baca is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Archaeology and Cultural Anthropology, Faculty of Philosophy, Comenius University in Bratislava. He has been a faculty member since 2016 and also serves as a study advisor and international mobility coordinator for archaeology programs. His academic training and professional work are deeply rooted in the archaeology of the Early Bronze Age and Eneolithic periods in Central Europe.
His research interests focus on prehistoric settlement patterns, fortified sites, burial practices, and the socio-political structures of early European societies. He employs interdisciplinary methods, including laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) and stable isotope analysis, to investigate material culture and human remains. His work bridges traditional archaeology with scientific analysis, contributing to a deeper understanding of social dynamics in the Carpathian and Danube regions during the 3rd to 2nd millennia BCE.
The recent publications reflect a strong trend in both archaeological science and theoretical inquiry. Articles span topics from metallurgical analysis and isotopic studies to ideological influences on archaeology during the communist era. This dual focus highlights a unique combination of empirical scientific research and critical historical reflection within Central European archaeology.
Martin Baca has been involved in numerous research projects funded by national grants such as VEGA and APVV, serving both as principal investigator and co-investigator. His fieldwork includes extensive excavation at key Early Bronze Age sites like Santovka, Vráble-Fidvár, and Ludanice. He has also conducted study stays at the German Archaeological Institute in Frankfurt and the University of Ljubljana, enhancing his international collaboration and methodological expertise.
He is an active member of the academic community, serving on the editorial board of Musaica archeologica and participating in the European Association of Archaeologists and the Slovak Archaeological Society. These roles underscore his commitment to scholarly dissemination and professional engagement.
