Professor Martijn Konings is a leading scholar in political economy and social theory at the University of Sydney, affiliated with the Sydney Centre for Healthy Societies and Sydney Policy Lab. His research focuses on the intersection of political economy and social theory, with a particular emphasis on neoliberalism, financial governance, and the dynamics of inequality driven by asset ownership. He holds a Future Fellowship from the Australian Research Council (2025) and has authored influential works such as The Bailout State (2024) and The Asset Economy (2020).
His research interests include the transformation of class structures under capitalism, the role of financial institutions in governance, and the implications of asset-based inequality. Recent projects explore the 'asset economy'—a framework analyzing how property ownership reshapes societal hierarchies—and the political economy of post-crisis bailouts. He advises on policy issues related to housing, wealth disparity, and the future of the middle class.
Key publications span books, edited volumes, and peer-reviewed journals, addressing topics like the Great Credit Crash, neoliberalism's cultural dimensions, and the critique of financial speculation. His work frequently bridges theoretical analysis with empirical studies, offering critical insights into contemporary capitalism's structural challenges.
