Martijn Hesselink is a Full-time Professor of Transnational Law and Theory at the European University Institute's Department of Law. He previously held the position of Professor of European Private Law at the University of Amsterdam and directed its Centre for the Study of European Contract Law. His research focuses on social justice, radical democracy, revolution, and their intersections with law, particularly EU private and constitutional law, employing normative and critical approaches.
He has advised the European Commission on European contract law and contributed studies to the European Parliament. His recent works include *Justifying Contract in Europe: Political Philosophies of European Contract Law* (Oxford UP, 2021). Current research explores prefigurative law, transnational democracy, and legal theory through projects like the 'Private Law Working Group' and 'Legal and Political Theory Working Group'.
He teaches seminars on normative legal approaches, legal epistemology, and transnational injustice. Supervised students include prominent researchers in European law and critical theory. His work often intersects with activism, as seen in his advocacy for Palestinian rights and critiques of authoritarianism.
