Prof. Martijn Eickhoff is a Professor by Special Appointment in Archaeology and Heritage of War and Mass Violence at the University of Groningen's Faculty of Arts, appointed by KNAW/NIOD. He is Director of the NIOD Institute for War, Holocaust and Genocide Studies. His research focuses on the cultural dimensions and spatial aspects of war, mass violence, and regime changes in Asia and Europe, particularly their transnational and material legacies.
Key research areas include colonial archaeology, Nazi-era ideological misuses of archaeology, post-colonial heritage politics in Indonesia, and the historiography of 19th-20th century conflicts. His work bridges archaeology, history, and heritage studies with a focus on ethical engagement and societal relevance.
Recent publications explore Indonesian heritage politics, Nazi SS research networks, and Dutch-Belgian Mediterranean archaeology debates. He has been actively involved in public engagements, including media commentary on newly released Nazi collaborator lists and exhibitions at heritage centers.
As NIOD director since 2021, he oversees critical research into war crimes, genocide, and memory politics. His work emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches to understanding the material and spatial traces of violence across historical contexts.
