Martha Roth is the Chauncey S. Boucher Distinguished Service Professor in the Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations and the Institute for the Study of Ancient Cultures (ISAC) at the University of Chicago. She has taught at the university since 1980 and currently serves as Editor-in-Charge of the Chicago Assyrian Dictionary.

Her research focuses on the legal and social history of the ancient Near East, particularly family law, women's legal and social issues, and the transmission of legal norms. She is currently working on Mesopotamian law cases, examining judicial practices through primary cuneiform sources.
