Martha Nussbaum is the Ernst Freund Distinguished Service Professor of Law and Ethics at the University of Chicago, appointed in the Law School and Philosophy Department. She holds associate appointments in the Classics Department, Divinity School, and Political Science Department, and participates in the Committee on Southern Asian Studies and the Human Rights Program.

Her research spans ethics, political philosophy, law, and human development, addressing themes like justice, emotions in moral philosophy, disability rights, LGBTQ rights, religious equality, and democratic values. Her work integrates classical studies, legal analysis, and global ethics.
Recent publications focus on political emotions, religious tolerance, human capabilities, and constitutional law. Themes include democratic theory, social justice, moral psychology, and interdisciplinary approaches to policy.
