Martha Bakker is a Professor and Chairholder of the Land Use Planning Group at Wageningen University's School of Landscape Architecture and Spatial Planning. With a background in physical geography and a PhD in land use change related to soil degradation (Universite Catholique de Louvain la Neuve), she transitioned from postdoctoral research in Land Dynamics to leading the Land Use Planning group in July 2019.

Her research focuses on sustainable agricultural systems through spatial planning, addressing challenges like nitrogen pollution, climate adaptation, and phosphate rights. Current projects include Flexible Energy Communities, SPLENDID circular development strategies, and SINCERE organic waste utilization for soil health.
Recent publications highlight her work on spatial zoning for agricultural sustainability (2021) and broader land use visions reconciling environmental protection with stakeholder needs (2020). She teaches MSc/BSc thesis courses and internships in Land Use Planning while serving as an expert advisor for the Netherlands' ENW river policy group.
