Marta Straznicky is a Professor in the Department of English Language and Literature at Queen’s University, part of the Faculty of Arts and Science. Her research focuses on early modern women playwrights, the materiality of plays in print, and the intersection of drama with book trade practices. She holds a PhD from the University of Ottawa.
Research Interests: Her work examines plays by women (1550–1650), exploring how these texts circulated outside public theatres through private reading and household performances. Key areas include the history of reading, early modern print culture, and Shakespeare’s textual legacy in books versus theatre. Recent projects address life writing, immigrant letter-writing, and diaspora narratives.
Publications & Trends: Straznicky’s scholarship bridges literary analysis with bibliographical studies, emphasizing how material forms shape meaning. Her books (e.g., Privacy, Playreading, and Women’s Closet Drama, 2004) and edited volumes (Shakespeare’s Stationers, 2013) establish her as a leading voice in early modern textual studies. Recent work (Women’s Household Plays, 2018; 2021 essay on Shakespeare’s book trade) highlights her focus on marginalized voices and textual networks.
Awards: Won the 2018 Best Teaching Edition Prize for Women’s Household Drama.
