Marta Skowron Volponi is a researcher affiliated with the Department of Zoology and Genetics at the University of Białystok and currently holds a post-doctoral position at the University of Florence. Her work focuses on Batesian mimicry in insects, particularly butterflies and clearwing moths, exploring their morphological, behavioral, chemical, and acoustic adaptations. She combines classical taxonomy with molecular techniques like DNA barcoding and advanced field methodologies such as acoustic recording systems (e.g., buzzOmeter).
Her research has led to discoveries of new moth species and genera in Southeast Asia, including rediscoveries of 'lost' species. Key projects include investigating hymenopteran flight mimicry and the role of scent in peacock moth mimicry. She has been supported by grants from the National Science Center (Sonatina) and the Bekker Programme for international academic exchange.
Publications highlight interdisciplinary approaches, blending ecology, genetics, and behavioral studies to understand mimicry's evolutionary and conservation significance. Recent work addresses trophic competition between honeybees and wild pollinators, underscoring her contributions to both basic and applied entomology.
