Marta L. Bryan is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Astronomy & Astrophysics at the University of Toronto, with dual affiliations at the Dunlap Institute for Astronomy & Astrophysics and the Canadian Institute for Theoretical Astrophysics (CITA). She will transition to Penn State University in 2026. Dr. Bryan completed her Ph.D. at Caltech in 2018.
Her educational background includes:
- Ph.D. in Astrophysics, Caltech (2018)
Dr. Bryan's research program investigates how planetary systems form and evolve beyond our Solar System through:
- Direct imaging of young planetary systems to study formation processes
- High-resolution spectroscopy for exoplanet atmosphere characterization
- Measurement of exoplanetary obliquities to understand system architectures
- Analysis of ultra-hot Jupiter atmospheric dynamics
- Exploration of connections between super-Earths and gas giant analogs
- Investigation of angular momentum regulation in young planets
- Study of magnetic phenomena in substellar objects
Her work bridges observational astronomy with planetary science using multiple observational techniques to extract maximum scientific value from telescope data. Dr. Bryan leads a research group that combines observational data from major facilities with theoretical modeling.
As a principal investigator, she mentors graduate students and postdoctoral researchers while securing grants to support observations with major ground-based and space-based telescopes. Her research group operates within Toronto's vibrant astronomical community, collaborating with colleagues at the Dunlap Institute and CITA to advance exoplanet science.
