Marta Jenkala is a Teaching Professor at University College London's School of Slavonic and East European Studies (SSEES), specializing in Ukrainian language and culture. She has taught at SSEES since 1999 and previously served as External Examiner in Ukrainian (1993–99). Her roles include leading Ukrainian language programs at BA and MA levels, coordinating postgraduate language teaching, and managing the CEELBAS Language Repository as part of the Centre for East European Language-Based Area Studies (CEELBAS). She also directed the Ukrainian Institute in London (2004–2010) and established Ukrainian language courses at the University of Cambridge's Slavonic Department (2006–2018).
Education: BA Honours in French and Linguistics (UCL), PGCE in secondary education, and MA in Second Language Learning and Teaching (UCL).
Research focuses on Ukrainian language pedagogy, materials development for language learning, and the status of Ukrainian studies in the UK. She co-authored Teaching Slavonic Languages, created an online Ukrainian beginners’ course on UCL Moodle, and promotes translation mentoring. Her work extends to cultural topics like the pysanka (Ukrainian decorated egg).
Professional contributions include leading the FAVOR project, organizing CEELBAS workshops, and presenting at conferences in the UK and Ukraine. She has published articles on Ukrainian language/culture and participated in media broadcasts.
