Marta Guasch Ferre is an Associate Professor in the Department of Public Health, Section of Epidemiology at the University of Copenhagen. She also serves as a Group Leader at the Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Basic Metabolic Research and as an Adjunct Associate Professor at the Department of Nutrition, Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. Her academic career spans multiple prestigious institutions including Harvard Medical School and Brigham Women's Hospital.
Dr. Guasch Ferre's educational background includes:
- PhD in Nutrition and Metabolism (2014) from Rovira i Virgili University, Spain
- Master's in Nutrition and Metabolism (2011) from Rovira i Virgili University and University of Barcelona
- BS in Human Nutrition and Dietetics (2009) from Rovira i Virgili University
Her primary research focuses on investigating the role of dietary and lifestyle factors in chronic diseases, specifically cardiovascular disease (CVD) and type 2 diabetes (T2D). She has pioneered the integration of high-throughput omics techniques, metabolomics, and genetics into traditional epidemiological analysis to gain insights into underlying mechanisms. Her research group is dedicated to integrating nutrition and lifestyle with big data to advance the prevention of non-communicable diseases. Current research areas include nutritional epidemiology for cardiometabolic disease prevention, the interplay between diet and metabolomics, circulating metabolites and mortality risk, leveraging big data to improve diet biomarkers, and the intersection between nutrition and planetary health.
Analysis of Dr. Guasch Ferre's recent publications reveals a strong focus on the relationship between specific dietary components and health outcomes. Her work prominently features olive oil, nuts, and plant-based diets in relation to cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and mortality. There is a clear trajectory toward integrating metabolomics and omics data with traditional epidemiological approaches, demonstrating innovation in nutritional science methodology. Her research consistently leverages large prospective cohort studies and employs sophisticated analytical techniques to identify biomarkers and metabolic pathways.
Dr. Guasch Ferre has received several prestigious awards recognizing her contributions to cardiovascular and diabetes research:
- Sandra A. Daugherty Award for Excellence in Cardiovascular Disease or Hypertension Epidemiology and Prevention (American Heart Association, 2021)
- Epidemiology and Prevention Early Career Travel Award (American Heart Association, 2018)
- Finalist for Jeremiah and Rose Stamler Research Award for New Investigators (American Heart Association, 2017)
- Travel Award from Postdoctoral Association, HSPH (2016)
- Most Impactful Publication in Lifestyle and Cardiometabolic Health (2015)
As an educator and mentor, Dr. Guasch Ferre has supervised 2 bachelor students, 1 master student, 4 PhD students, and 7 postdocs. Currently, she serves as co-director for two theses, primary supervisor for 1 postdoc, and co-supervisor for 2 postdocs. Her teaching portfolio includes Advanced Epidemiology at University of Massachusetts Lowell, Nutritional Epidemiology at Simmons College and Tufts University, and various nutrition courses at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and Rovira i Virgili University. She has secured significant research funding as Principal Investigator, including NIH R21 grants, American Diabetes Association Fellowships, and European Association for the Study of Diabetes grants focused on metabolomics, Mediterranean diet, and cardiometabolic disease research.
Dr. Guasch Ferre leads the "Nutrition, -omics, and cardiometabolic diseases group" at the Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Basic Metabolic Research. Her team leverages interdisciplinary approaches combining epidemiology, metabolomics, and big data analytics to investigate nutritional determinants of chronic diseases. The group actively collaborates with international researchers across multiple institutions to advance understanding of diet-disease relationships.
