Marry-Anne Karlsen is an Associate Professor at the Department of Social Anthropology, University of Bergen. Her research focuses on migration, welfare state policies, and border politics, with particular attention to the temporal dimensions of irregular migration and asylum litigation. She leads the ERC-funded project ASYKNOW, exploring expert knowledge in asylum cases, and contributes to projects like TemPro (examining temporary protection policies) and PROTECT (analyzing global vs. nativist asylum trends).
Her recent work includes the monograph *Migration Control and Access to Welfare* (2021), co-editing *Waiting and the Temporalities of Irregular Migration* (2020), and analyzing vulnerability frameworks in migration governance. She is a board member of IMER Bergen and former board member of Nordic Migration Research. Her interdisciplinary approach combines legal anthropology with ethnographic fieldwork in Norway, Spain, and beyond. Key themes in her writing include the paradoxes of welfare provision to irregular migrants, chronopolitics, and the entanglement of legal systems with migrant temporalities.
