Marlies Vollebregt serves as both an Education/Research Officer and PhD candidate within the Aquatic Ecology and Water Quality Management department at Wageningen University & Research. Her research focuses on ecosystem dynamics, particularly examining stability mechanisms in ecological networks and responses to environmental change.
Her research interests span multiple critical areas in contemporary ecology including:
- Food web stability and biodiversity-ecosystem function relationships
- Early warning signals for critical transitions in complex systems
- Climate change impacts on peatland ecosystems
- Trophic interactions and community dynamics
- Ecosystem resilience to perturbations
Analysis of her publication record reveals a consistent research trajectory examining stability mechanisms in ecological systems. Her work bridges theoretical ecology with practical environmental concerns, particularly investigating how ecosystems respond to both small disturbances and large-scale regime shifts. The research demonstrates sophisticated integration of mathematical modeling with empirical ecological data across diverse ecosystems from aquatic food webs to boreal peatlands.
Vollebregt is actively pursuing her PhD through the project "Generic early warning signals for critical transitions" under the supervision of Prof. Marten Scheffer, with additional guidance from Dr. Miquel Lürling and Dr. Egbert van Nes. Her work has garnered significant attention in the scientific community, with multiple publications in high-impact journals including Nature Climate Change and Ecology Letters, and substantial citation metrics indicating influence in the field of theoretical ecology and environmental change research.
