Marlaina H. Martin

Marlaina H. Martin is the Henderson-Harris Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Anthropology at University of Vermont. She earned her PhD in Anthropology from Rutgers University with a graduate certificate in Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, following BA degrees in Anthropology and American Studies from Brown University.

Research Focus: Martin investigates how Black women and nonbinary media-makers create projects that challenge Hollywood production models through photography, film, video, and social media. Her research examines how media technology education enables Black feminist reimaginings of identity and social structures.

Methodological Approach: Combines participant observation, content analysis, formal interviews, archival research, and cyberethnography to study independent media spaces and communities.
