Marla R. Miller is a Distinguished Professor of History and Associate Dean for Strategic Initiatives at the University of Massachusetts Amherst’s College of Humanities and Fine Arts. Her research focuses on U.S. women’s work before industrialization, early American history, material culture, and public history. She has authored or edited multiple influential books, including Entangled Lives (2019) and Betsy Ross and the Making of America (2010), which redefined public understanding of women’s roles in early America.

Her research explores intersections between labor, gender, and material culture, with a focus on 18th-century New England. She co-authored Bending the Future (2016), a seminal work on historic preservation strategies, and led the Imperiled Promise study (2012), analyzing the National Park Service’s historical interpretation practices. Her work bridges academia and public engagement through museum collaborations and policy advocacy.
