Markus Wahl

Markus Wahl is a Researcher at the Institute for the History and Ethics of Medicine, Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg, a position he has held since January 2022. Previously, he worked as a Research Associate at the Institute for the History of Medicine in Stuttgart (2017-2021) under the Robert Bosch Foundation, contributing to historical medical research in German contexts.

His academic training includes doctoral studies at the University of Kent, UK (2013-2016) supported by a scholarship, an internship at the Hannah Arendt Institute (2013), and a Master's in Contemporary History from the University of Canterbury, New Zealand (2012-2013). His Master's thesis examined SED policies toward medical professionals during 1961-1981.

Wahl specializes in the social history of medicine in East Germany, with core interests spanning alcohol and drug addiction history, psychiatric practices, memory studies, and microhistorical approaches. His research investigates patient experiences, medical ethics under socialism, and the negotiation of Nazi legacies within GDR healthcare, often using localized case studies to illuminate systemic patterns and societal structures.

Analysis of his publications reveals consistent focus on GDR medical systems, particularly addiction treatment methodologies, gendered pharmaceutical practices, and the interplay between state politics and medical professionalism. His work demonstrates recurring themes of memory construction, institutional continuity, and the lived experiences of both patients and practitioners in socialist East Germany.

Wahl has secured research funding through a University of Kent doctoral scholarship and the Robert Bosch Foundation. He has edited the volume 'Volkseigene Gesundheit' (2020) and contributed to multiple collaborative projects examining socialist medicine and medical ethics.
