Prof. Dr. Markus Wagner is a Professor of Criminal Law and Criminal Procedure Law at the Faculty of Law and Political Science at the University of Bonn. Previously, he served as an Acting Professor of Criminal Law at Philipps University Marburg and held academic positions at Justus Liebig University Giessen, including Academic Councillor and Acting Chair at the University of Leipzig.
His educational background includes:
- Doctorate in law from Justus Liebig University Giessen (2015) with dissertation on "The Accessorie of White-Collar Criminal Law"
- Habilitation at Justus Liebig University Giessen (2022) with thesis on "The Correspondence Clause in Section 13 (1) of the German Criminal Code"
- First and Second State Examinations in Law
Prof. Wagner's research focuses on criminal law theory, criminal procedure, white-collar crime, commercial criminal law, and international criminal law. His work explores fundamental questions in criminal liability, particularly concerning omission offenses, corporate criminal responsibility, and the intersection of criminal law with compliance systems. He has made significant contributions to understanding the "correspondence clause" in German criminal code section 13(1) and has critically examined proposals to include ecocide in the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court. His publications demonstrate a consistent pattern of addressing complex theoretical problems with practical legal implications, particularly in corporate criminal liability and compliance systems.
His scientific awards include the doctoral prize of the Giessen Law Study Society and the WisteV Prize 2016.
