Markus Stock is a Professor of German and Medieval Studies at the University of Toronto, affiliated with the Centre for Medieval Studies and the Department of Germanic Languages & Literatures. He serves as Principal of University College (on leave 2024-25) and Vice-Dean of College Relations in the Faculty of Arts and Science. His research focuses on medieval German literature, manuscript studies, and digital philology, with SSHRC-funded projects exploring themes like 'Medieval Undergrounds: A Cultural History of Extraction.' He has authored/co-edited over a dozen books and journal issues, including Burkhard von Hohenfels: Edition und Kommentar (2020) and co-edited special issues on commentary practices, digital curation, and transdisciplinary studies.
Stock holds a Dr. phil. from the University of Göttingen (2000) and has held visiting professorships at Harvard University and the University of Freiburg. He is a past President of German Studies Canada (2021–23) and co-editor of Seminar: A Journal of Germanic Studies. His teaching spans medieval German romance, heroic epics, and philological methodologies.
His recent work emphasizes transcultural perspectives, medieval media, and the intersection of digital humanities with traditional philology. Upcoming projects include studies on liminal spaces in medieval narratives and cultural histories of extraction. Stock actively supervises MA/PhD students in medieval and early modern German literature and culture.
