Markus Sommer

Markus Sommer is a Research Fellow at Philipps-Universität Marburg's Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, affiliated with the Distributed Systems Group (AG Freisleben). He holds a Master of Science in Computer Science (2020) and is pursuing a PhD in Computer Science since 2020. His research focuses on resilient communication systems for disaster scenarios, ad-hoc wireless networks, and software-defined networking architectures. He is a core member of the LOEWE center emergenCITY, specializing in crisis communication technologies.

Key technical expertise includes Python and Go programming, disruption-tolerant networking (DTN), and protocol design for wireless edge devices. He contributes to projects like ProgDTN (programmable DTN) and QUICL (QUIC-based DTN convergence layer), emphasizing network function virtualization and energy-efficient decentralized communication.

Recent work emphasizes low-cost LoRa-based crisis communication systems, energy-efficient multi-hop broadcasting, and unobtrusive mechanism interception for enhancing legacy network systems. His research bridges theoretical networking models with practical implementations for real-world disaster response scenarios.
