Professor Markus Mueller holds a Personal Chair in Electrical Generation Systems at the University of Edinburgh's School of Engineering. He has been a lecturer since 2004 and leads Energy@Edinburgh, a cross-university initiative with 200+ researchers. His expertise spans renewable energy systems, superconducting machines, and direct drive generators.
Education:
- BSc(Eng) in Engineering, Imperial College London (1988)
- PhD in Electrical Engineering, University of Cambridge (1991)
Research Focus: Innovations in electrical generators for renewables (wave, wind, tidal), hybrid energy systems, and high-temperature superconducting technologies. Active in industry collaborations, including C-GEN generator designs for Mocean Energy and Swift Energy.
Awards:
- Donald Julius Groen Prize (2006)
- Thomas L Fagan Jr RAMS Award (2017)
- Engineer Magazine Innovation Award (2012)
Grants & Industry: Secured £13m in grants (75% as PI) from EPSRC, EU, and industry. Spun out NGenTec Ltd (2009) to commercialize C-GEN technology. Current collaborations include projects in the USA, Australia, and Scandinavia.
Labs/Teams: Co-leads Energy@Edinburgh and directs research at the Institute for Energy Systems. Active in EU consortia and Scottish enterprise networks like RENEW-NET.
