Markus Knobloch is a Professor and Head of the Institute of Structural Design (KE) at the University of Stuttgart, Germany. He is part of the Cluster of Excellence IntCDC and previously served as Dean of the Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering (2021-2023). His career spans academic and industrial roles in steel, lightweight, and composite structures.
- PhD from ETH Zurich (2007)
- Habilitation at ETH Zurich (2014)
- Academic leadership at Ruhr University Bochum (2014-2024)
His research focuses on structural mechanics, stability, and durability. He explores advanced topics such as fire behavior of structures, large-scale testing, and numerical simulations. His work bridges computational design with sustainable construction practices.
Knobloch has been recognized with multiple awards, including the ETH Zurich Medal for his doctoral thesis and the Structures in Fire Best Paper Award. He has contributed to international standards through his leadership roles in CEN/TC250/SC3 (Eurocode 3) and CEN/TC250/SC4 (Eurocode 4). His expertise is sought in conferences like SDSS, SiF, and IABSE.
- Current research includes timber joints optimization (AP 51) and wind energy structures
- Active in structural stability, fatigue, and composite systems
- Recipient of the Bernt Johansson Outstanding Paper Award nomination
