معرفی
Markus J. Buehler is the Jerry McAfee (1940) Professor in Engineering at MIT, holding a joint appointment in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. He leads the Laboratory for Atomistic and Molecular Mechanics (LAMM), focused on computational modeling of biological and bio-inspired materials. His research bridges molecular-scale interactions with macroscopic material properties, leveraging AI, machine learning, and multi-scale simulations. Buehler’s work explores protein-based materials, biomimetic design, and sustainable composites, with applications in energy, healthcare, and environmental engineering.
Educational Background:
- Ph.D. (Dr. rer. nat.), Materials Science (Chemistry), Max Planck Institute for Metals Research, University of Stuttgart (2004)
- M.S., Engineering Mechanics, Michigan Technological University (2001)
- B.S. equivalent, Process and Chemical Engineering, University of Stuttgart (2000)
Research Interests:
His pioneering studies on materiomics (the study of materials through integrated multi-scale approaches) have advanced understanding of biological materials like collagen, silk, and elastin. Buehler’s lab develops AI-driven tools for protein design, sustainable materials, and nanoconfined systems. Key areas include:
- Mechanics of hierarchical protein structures
- Physics-aware AI for alloy design and materials discovery
- Bio-mimetic architected materials
- Agentic AI systems for scientific hypothesis generation
Awards & Leadership:
Recipient of the 2025 Washington Award, the nation’s premier engineering honor, along with the Hardy Award, Leonardo da Vinci Award, and PECASE. He served as MIT’s Department Head of Civil and Environmental Engineering (2013–2020) and president of the Society of Engineering Science. His interdisciplinary work has led to over 500 peer-reviewed publications and collaborations with industries and global institutions.
Labs & Teams:
The LAMM lab includes ~15 researchers (students, postdocs, and staff) equipped with supercomputing, 3D printing, and hydrothermal reactors. Notable projects include:
- Designing self-healing biomaterials
- AI-based protein structure prediction
- Materiomusic (sonification of molecular structures)
- Sustainable composites from sewage sludge
Teaching & Outreach:
Instructs courses on materials science, multi-scale modeling, and biomechanics. Leads K-12 STEM initiatives and MIT Professional Education programs, emphasizing education in computational materials innovation.
