Markus Hällgren is a Professor of Management and Organization at Umeå School of Business, Economics and Statistics (USBE), Umeå University. He also serves as Head of Research for the department of Business Administration, co-coordinator of the 'AI-Management' theme at the Centre for Transdisciplinary AI for the Good of All (TAIGA), and founder/leader of the Extreme Environments – Everyday Decisions (TripleEd) research program. His research focuses on organizational routines, leadership, and sensemaking in extreme contexts such as emergency departments, mountaineering expeditions, and crisis management.
Key affiliations include Umeå University's Department of Business Administration, the Centre for Transdisciplinary AI, and international collaborations with institutions like HEC Montreal and Cambridge University. Hällgren has been a visiting researcher at Stanford University (2011–2013) and has received prestigious awards including the Academy of Management Annals Best Paper and the Royal Skyttean Award.
His research explores extreme contexts through interdisciplinary lenses, including 'Extreme Fiction' and the 'Projects-as-Practice' approach. Major contributions include founding the 'Organizing Extreme Contexts' network (700+ scholars) and the Competence Forum Region North for public-sector resilience-building. Current projects investigate incident command centers and AI's role in organizational contexts.
Publications span crisis leadership, project management, and ethnographic studies in high-stakes environments. His work appears in top journals like Academy of Management Annals, Journal of Management Studies, and International Journal of Project Management.
