Prof. Dr. Markus Huff is a W3 Professor of Applied Cognitive Psychology at the Eberhard Karls Universität Tübingen and Head of the Perception and Action Lab at the Institute for Science Education (IWM). Since 2025, he has also served as Deputy Director of the IWM and member of the Executive Board of the 'Medien in der Bildung' foundation. His research focuses on perception and action processes in digital environments, including AI ethics, risk perception, narrative comprehension, and metascience.
He studied psychology, mathematics, and computer science at Tübingen University, earning his doctorate (Dr. rer. nat.) in 2007 with a thesis on verbal influences on visual memory. His career includes postdoctoral roles at Washington University in St. Louis and leadership positions at the German Institute for Adult Education (DIE). He received the Leibniz Young Investigators Award for his PhD work in 2007.
Key research interests include: cognitive processes in digital media interaction, AI ethics, perception of narratives (films, comics), and evaluating open science policies. His work bridges experimental psychology with real-world applications in education and technology.
Notable projects include ArchiveGPT, investigating AI in archives, and studies on climate change communication and AI risk perception. His 2025 publications explore topics like algorithm aversion, trust in AI agents, and global perceptions of scientists.
