Markus Hecker is a Professor in the School of Environment and Sustainability at the University of Saskatchewan, holding the Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Predictive Toxicology and Chemical Safety. He is also a Member of the Royal Society of Canada’s College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists. His research focuses on environmental stressors’ biological impacts, environmental risk assessment, aquatic ecology, and bioanalytical techniques. He holds a PhD and MSc from the Institute of Hydrobiology and Fisheries Science, University of Hamburg.
Research interests include investigating how pollutants affect aquatic organisms, particularly fish, and developing methods to assess chemical toxicity. His work spans transcriptomics, endocrine disruption, and the effects of emerging contaminants like 6PPD-quinone. Awards include the prestigious CRC Tier 1 Chair. He has contributed to over 100 peer-reviewed articles, emphasizing transgenerational toxicity, aquatic ecosystem health, and predictive toxicology tools.
Key projects involve assessing complex groundwater mixtures, microplastic impacts, and the toxicokinetics of contaminants across species. His lab integrates genomics, transcriptomics, and field studies to address real-world environmental challenges, such as mitigating pollution risks in freshwater systems.
