Markus Hafner is an Associate Professor of Classical Philology (Greek Studies) at the University of Graz, Austria. His research spans four key areas: Greco-Roman interculturality, concepts of authorship in antiquity, rhetoric of mourning and consolation, and the history of classical philology in the 20th century.
- Leading the COLLAPSE project (ERC Starting Grant 2024-2028) on anonymous collaboration in Imperial Greek literature
- Investigating the Gnomon journal's role during Nazi-era (2019-ongoing)
- Coordinating cross-border research on antiquity/modern appropriation with the OeAD Slovenia-Austria project (2023-2024)
His published works focus on cooperative authorship models, pseudonymous writings, and German classical scholarship under totalitarian regimes. He has won major awards including the Bruno-Snell-Preis (2024) and joined the Youth Academy of Europe (2024).
