Markus Cornberg

Prof Dr med. Markus Cornberg is a W3-Professor of Infectious Diseases with a focus on Hepatology and Deputy Director of the Department of Gastroenterology, Hepatology, Infectious Diseases and Endocrinology at Hannover Medical School, Germany. He serves as Clinical Director of the Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research and Director of the Centre for Individualized Infection Medicine (CIIM) since 2019. Additionally, he is the Medical Executive Director of the German Liver Foundation and has coordinated the German guideline on hepatitis B virus infection since 2007.

Prof. Cornberg's research focuses on cellular immune responses for disease progression and treatment response in patients with viral hepatitis. His clinical expertise centers on infectious liver diseases, where he has been involved in numerous clinical trials investigating new drugs for viral liver infections. He previously served as managing director of Hep-Net and was a member of the Scientific Committee and Governing Board of the European Association for the Study of the Liver (EASL) from 2017 to 2020. As Associate Editor of the Journal of Hepatology since 2019, he contributes significantly to academic discourse in hepatology.

His publication record shows consistent research output with over 300 original scientific papers and review articles, primarily focused on viral hepatitis, liver disease management, and clinical guidelines. The most recent publications demonstrate his leadership in developing clinical practice guidelines, epidemiological studies of hepatitis prevalence, and clinical trials of novel antiviral therapies, particularly for hepatitis B and D.

Prof. Cornberg has held significant editorial and leadership positions including serving as Associate Editor of the Journal of Hepatology since 2019 and previously as a member of EASL's Scientific Committee. His work with the German Liver Foundation and Hep-Net demonstrates his commitment to translating research into clinical practice and public health initiatives.

He leads the research group focused on Immunology of Viral Hepatitis and Infections in Liver Cirrhosis at CIIM, where his team investigates the cellular immune mechanisms underlying viral hepatitis progression and treatment response. This research directly informs clinical practice through the development of evidence-based guidelines and novel therapeutic approaches.
