Markus Arnold serves as Professor of Political Philosophy and Cultural Studies at the University of Art and Design Linz since 2022, affiliated with the Institute of Fine Arts and Cultural Studies and Department of Cultural Studies.
His research critically examines power dynamics through cultural frameworks, with inaugural lecture "The politics of gratitude and why we should fear it" analyzing how rulers exploit gift-giving to manufacture dependence and obedience. Arnold contends that "every culture is permeated by relations of power; moreover, every culture configures the effects of power and shapes its practice," positioning cultural analysis as essential for understanding political control mechanisms. His work bridges normative political theory with empirical cultural studies to expose hidden power structures in social relations.
Arnold's scholarship reveals how gratitude operates as a political tool that simultaneously fosters solidarity while enabling authoritarian manipulation, emphasizing culture's active role in configuring power effects across societal institutions.
