Dr. Mark Winskel is a Senior Lecturer in the Science, Technology and Innovation Studies group within the School of Social and Political Science at the University of Edinburgh. With over 25 years of research experience in energy systems, policies, and organizations, he serves as Deputy Director in Phase 5 of the UK Energy Research Centre (UKERC) and has held various leadership roles including UKERC's national Research Co-ordinator from 2009-2014.
His research focuses on several interconnected areas:
- Systematic evidence reviews on energy policy issues for Scottish and UK Governments
- Interdisciplinarity, expertise and research-policy exchange in energy systems
- Energy innovation studies and energy transitions
- Energy scenarios and future studies for policy development
Dr. Winskel's recent publications (2023-2025) demonstrate a strong emphasis on energy transitions, particularly examining heat pump costs, seasonal thermal energy storage, and decarbonization strategies. His work consistently takes an interdisciplinary approach, bridging social science perspectives with technical energy system analysis to inform policy development, with a particular focus on evidence-based policymaking and systematic reviews.
He actively supervises PhD students on topics related to energy policy, innovation, and transitions, with current and completed students working on projects examining energy incumbents in transition, governance of energy networks, building-integrated photovoltaics, and electricity policy change. His research is supported by numerous grants from UKERC, EPSRC, ClimateXChange, and other research councils.
Dr. Winskel plays significant roles in multiple research networks and initiatives:
- Co-Chair of the Energy@Edinburgh network promoting cross-university energy research collaborations
- Steering Group member for the Centre for Science, Knowledge and Policy (SKAPE)
- Steering Group member of the Global Environment and Society Academy (GESA)
- Contributor to the Edinburgh Earth Initiative development
- Former interim Policy Director of ClimateXChange (2019-2020)
