Mark Wilson is Professor of Urban & Regional Planning in the School of Planning, Design and Construction at Michigan State University, where he also serves as director of the Planning, Design and Construction doctorate program. His academic leadership extends to multiple research initiatives that bridge theory and practice in urban development.
His educational foundation includes:
- Bachelor's degree from the University of Melbourne
- Master's degree from the University of Melbourne
- Master of Arts in Regional Science from the University of Pennsylvania
- PhD in Regional Science from the University of Pennsylvania
Professor Wilson's research agenda centers on three interconnected domains: (1) The complex planning, land use, and economic dynamics of mega events including Olympics and World's Fairs; (2) The profound social, economic, and political implications of disruptive technologies—particularly the Internet and autonomous vehicles—with emphasis on urban planning strategies; and (3) Innovative methodologies using social media and big data to understand public attitudes toward cities and technological change. His influential 2013 book Global Information Society (co-authored with Aharon Kellerman and Kenneth E Corey) established him as a thought leader in understanding the intersection of information technology and urban development.
His publication record reveals consistent engagement with pressing urban challenges, particularly the implications of autonomous vehicle technology, mega-event planning, and industrial park development across global contexts. Recent work demonstrates increasing focus on the practical applications of digital tools for urban analysis and planning, reflecting broader trends in smart city development and data-driven governance.
Professor Wilson actively contributes to multiple affiliated programs including the Global Urban Studies Program, Mega Event Planning Research Group, Autonomous Futures, and MSU Mobility. His leadership in developing Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) on Mega Event Planning—particularly those addressing the Sochi Winter Games and FIFA World Cup—demonstrates his commitment to innovative educational approaches. His work with the United Nations on industrial park projects in Africa and the Middle East highlights the international scope and practical impact of his research.
