Mark Waddell is an Associate Professor at Michigan State University, affiliated with Lyman Briggs College, a residential college focused on science and society. His research bridges the intersections of religion, magic, and science in early modern Europe, with particular emphasis on imagery, persuasion, and trust in understanding nature's hidden forces.

- Ph.D. in History of Science, Medicine, and Technology from The Johns Hopkins University
- B.A. (Honours) in European History and History of Science from The University of Calgary
Dr. Waddell's work explores how early modern intellectuals, particularly Jesuits, navigated scientific inquiry within religious frameworks. His courses range from European witchcraft to cyborgism, reflecting his interdisciplinary focus on science's cultural and historical contexts. His publications and research projects examine topics like sympathetic healing, LGBTQ inclusion in STEM, and the legacy of Jesuit science.
His research has been supported by grants including the MSU HARP grant for "The Devil’s Cure" (2017) and the MSU Science and Society @ State grant for LGBTQ inclusion in STEM (2014). He has authored Jesuit Science and the End of Nature’s Secrets (Ashgate, 2015) and is currently preparing a book for Cambridge University Press on science, religion, and magic in early modern Europe.
