Mark W. Roche is the Rev. Edmund P. Joyce, C.S.C., Professor of German Language and Literature and Concurrent Professor of Philosophy at the University of Notre Dame. He previously served as Dean of the College of Arts and Letters from 1997 to 2008. Roche holds a Ph.D. in German Literature from Princeton University, an M.A. in Philosophy from Eberhard-Karls-Universität Tübingen, and a B.A. in History of Ideas from Williams College.

Roche’s research focuses on German literature, philosophy, film, and higher education. His notable works include Beautiful Ugliness: Christianity, Modernity, and the Arts (2023), Alfred Hitchcock: Filmmaker and Philosopher (2022), and Why Choose the Liberal Arts? (2010). He has been recognized with awards such as the Frederic W. Ness Book Award and the Joyce Award for Excellence in Teaching.
His teaching includes courses on German literature, philosophy, film, and the liberal arts. He has also held administrative roles, including department chair positions at Notre Dame and Ohio State University. Roche’s service contributions include leading initiatives on Catholic higher education and institutional mission.
Awards and Honors include multiple book awards and grants from prestigious foundations like the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation and the National Endowment for the Humanities.
Roche’s current projects include Theories of Ugliness: An Unseemly Aesthetic History (forthcoming 2025) and studies on faith, doubt, and reason in intellectual history.
