Mark Vesterbacka is a Professor at Linköping University, affiliated with the Department of Electrical Engineering (ISY) and the Division of Electronics and Computer Engineering (ELDA) within the Faculty of Science and Engineering. He serves as Director of PhD Studies in Electrical Engineering and is a member of the faculty's Appointment Board, demonstrating significant academic leadership. His work integrates research, teaching, and administration, with a strong focus on electronics education and innovation.
His research interests lie in the innovative domain of implementing traditional analog electronics using digital circuits. He identifies more as an inventor than a conventional researcher, emphasizing practical and novel applications in electronic systems. His expertise spans digital and mixed-signal electronics, programmable systems, and high-speed digital filter design. While currently focused more on teaching, he continues to pursue research endeavors.
Vesterbacka completed his Master’s thesis at ICP in Grenoble, France, and earned his PhD in 1997 from Linköping University on fast digital filters using serial processing. He has held a permanent academic position since 1998 and was promoted to full professor in 2002. In 2009, he spent nearly a year as a visiting scholar at BWRC, UC Berkeley, collaborating with B. Nikolić, enriching his international research experience.
He actively mentors students and frequently proposes Bachelor’s and Master’s thesis projects in electronics, encouraging student engagement in hands-on research. He has organized and championed academic events such as the annual PhD Workshop @ISY, fostering community and presentation skills among doctoral candidates. His institutional contributions reflect a deep commitment to academic development and collaboration.
