Mark Utting is an Associate Professor at The University of Queensland, Australia, with a strong research focus on software verification, model-based testing, and AI for testing. He has held academic positions at several Queensland universities, Waikato University in New Zealand, and the University of Franche-Comté in France, and has industry experience in genomics and manufacturing software development.
His research interests include software correctness, theorem proving, language design for parallel computing, and blockchain-based software verification. He is the author of the influential book Practical Model-Based Testing: A Tools Approach and has published over 80 papers in formal methods and software engineering.
Recent publications highlight his work in verifying compiler optimizations using Isabelle/HOL, differential testing of verification frameworks, and empirical studies on TypeScript’s evolution. These works reflect a strong trend toward formal verification, empirical analysis of programming languages, and the integration of AI in software testing.

Mark Utting has extensive experience managing software development teams in both academia and industry. He leads research projects involving formal verification tools such as VeriOpt and VeriSmart and contributes to open-source initiatives on GitHub, including the Agilkia toolkit for AI-for-testing. He has supervised multiple research students and is actively involved in software engineering conferences as author, reviewer, and session chair.
He is affiliated with the UQ Cyber group and contributes to projects on blockchain smart contract verification and model-based testing frameworks. His work bridges theoretical formal methods with practical software engineering challenges, aiming to improve software reliability in real-world systems.
