Dr. Mark Thomas Young is a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Oslo and TU Delft, holding a Marie-Sklodowska-Curie Individual Fellowship (2020). He specializes in the philosophy of technology and history of science, focusing on automation, maintenance practices, and early modern scientific methodology. He received his PhD in philosophy from the University of Bergen (2019), with prior studies at the University of Otago and University of Hawaii.
His research bridges two core areas: 1) the philosophy of technology examining automation's ethical and epistemological dimensions, and 2) the history and philosophy of science exploring craft practices and instruments in early modern England. Key projects include analyzing maintenance's role in metaphysics and the societal impacts of automating technologies.
Notable publications include works on artifact agency, experimental empiricism, and the sociological implications of technological autonomy. He has contributed to edited volumes such as Maintenance and Philosophy of Technology (2024) and Technology and the City (2021). His fellowship supports research on automation’s philosophical foundations at the University of Vienna.
Dr. Young’s work emphasizes interdisciplinary connections between technology, ethics, and historical contexts. He is affiliated with TU Delft’s Ethics/Philosophy of Technology section and actively engages in academic collaborations across Europe.
