Mark Stevens is an Associate Professor at the School of Community and Regional Planning (SCARP) at the University of British Columbia, where he has worked since July 2009. His academic credentials include a BA in English/Economics, an MCRP, and a PhD in Planning from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill.

Stevens’ research focuses on evaluating the effectiveness of local and regional land use planning efforts through the lens of sustainable development. His work emphasizes plan-making and implementation, growth management, natural hazard mitigation, and legal issues in planning. Recent projects include studying municipal climate change planning in British Columbia, conducting a meta-analysis of environmental policy adoption, evaluating award-winning plans, and analyzing quantitative methods courses in urban planning programs.
He teaches courses on plan-making, land use and environmental policy, and quantitative research methods. His expertise spans disasters and natural hazards, legal frameworks in planning, plan evaluation, sustainability planning, and quantitative analysis/modeling.
