Mark Smout is a Professor of Architecture and Landscape Futures at The Bartlett School of Architecture, University College London. He serves as Director of the MArch Urban Design program and holds visiting professorships at institutions like UC Berkeley (Howard Friedmann Visiting Professor) and AHO Aarhus (Velux International Visiting Professor). His work bridges architecture, landscape, and digital technologies, often examining climate change, heritage preservation, and anthropogenic impacts.
- Degrees: Diploma of Architecture (UCL, 1997), Bachelor of Arts (University of North London, 1994)
Smout's research focuses on architecture and landscape futures, particularly the intersection with mathematical physics and quantum physics. His projects explore augmented landscapes, hydrological infrastructure, and envirogrammic prototypes, often through speculative design and digital fabrication. Recent publications and exhibitions, such as Liquid Kingdom (2020) and Infractus (2016), highlight his work on climate adaptation and cultural heritage preservation.
His scientific awards include the Royal Academy Award for Architecture. Smout collaborates with ScanLAB Projects, Laura Allen, and others, and his work has been exhibited at venues like the Venice Biennale and the Chicago Biennial.
