Mark Shriver is a Professor of Anthropology at The Pennsylvania State University, located in University Park, PA. His research focuses on recent human evolution, particularly traits influenced by genetic variation across populations. He leads the Anthropometrics Lab, exploring phenotypes like skin pigmentation, facial morphology, and disease risks (e.g., preterm birth, type-2 diabetes). His work employs advanced techniques such as admixture mapping and 3D facial imaging, including collaborations with law enforcement for forensic applications (e.g., solving high-profile criminal cases). Shriver also innovates in science communication, creating educational video series like 'AnthroVision' and teaching courses on video-based scientific outreach. He holds a B.S. in Biology from SUNY Stony Brook (1987) and a Ph.D. in Genetics from UT Health Science Center Houston (1993).
His research spans global populations, with fieldwork in Brazil, Mexico, and Europe. He teaches courses on physical anthropology, molecular anthropology, and forensic anthropology. Shriver’s contributions include over 100 publications, emphasizing genetics of human variation and evolutionary adaptation.
